Itinerary

Day 1. Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Embark Ship

Fly into Porto today, an invigorating haven in sunny Portugal. Spain’s smaller, but no less magnificent, neighbour, Portugal is one of Europe’s warmest countries and boasts a mix of vibrant art, music wine and food. On arrival, you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to Vila Nova de Gaia, where we board the majestic river ship, the ms Douro Queen. Tonight, breathe in your surroundings and meet your fellow travellers and Travelmarvel Cruise Director at an elegant Welcome Reception.

Day 2. Vila Nova de Gaia, Pinhão

Today you begin your cruise along the spectacular Douro River. Flowing from the northern reaches of Spain, through Portugal and into the Atlantic Sea, this beautiful river waters the fertile plains of the Douro Valley, creating a vibrant hub of colour and life. As you cruise this morning, you’ll take part in a Portuguese lesson, during which you’ll learn some essential phrases of this beautiful language. On arrival in Régua, you’ll disembark the ship and join an excursion to the Douro Museum, which presents a fantastic exhibition on the history of the Douro wine region, the first protected wine growing region on earth. Afterwards, enjoy time at leisure to explore this charming riverside village. Reboard the ship, and enjoy a sunset sailing accompanied by traditional fado music as you cruise to Pinhão. On arrival, you’ll enjoy a sumptuous dinner at a local quinta, a traditional Portuguese winery.

Day 3. Pinhão, Vega de Terrón, Castelo Rodrigo

Today, cruise across the border into Vega de Terrón, Spain. Enjoy some time at leisure before joining an excursion to Castelo Rodrigo. This tiny village sits atop a hill overlooking both Spain and Portugal, and flaunts well-preserved ruins, an impressive castle and a magnificent stone statue of Santiago Matamouros. After exploring this charming little town, you’ll board a coach and return to your ship. Back on board, you’ll be treated to an entertaining Portuguese folk music show.

Day 4. Vega de Terrón, Salamanca, Barca d’Alva

Today you’ll board a coach and set off for the glorious Spanish city of Salamanca, where you’ll enjoy a guided tour and lunch. This gorgeous city is arguably one of the most beautiful in Spain, and boasts sunlit sandstone buildings along with a majestic city square and an ancient university. After lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to watch a captivating flamenco show, where dancers will astound you with their stomping feet and fiery performance (own expense). You’ll return to the ship back over the border in Barca d’Alva, the last Portuguese village along the Douro. Tonight, you’ll be joined by the commander of your ship for a special Captain’s Dinner.

Day 5. Barca d’Alva, Régua

This morning, enjoy a fascinating Portuguese cooking demonstration on board as your ship cruises towards Cais Espinho. On arrival, you will disembark and enjoy time at leisure to explore this delightful town. Later, you’ll regroup and head to the Quinta do Seixo winery, which boasts outstanding views over the Douro Valley. Here, you’ll enjoy a tasting of local port wine, Portugal’s most famous tipple. Afterwards, board a coach and take a scenic drive past swathes of expansive vineyards to meet your ship in Régua. This afternoon you will have the opportunity to visit Mateus Castle near Vila Real. Tonight, enjoy a sumptuous Portuguese barbecue back on board.

Day 6. Régua, Lamego, Entre-os-Rios

This morning, enjoy free time to explore Régua - you may like to wander along the riverfront, or venture into the lovely Old Town. This afternoon you’ll travel to Lamego, to visit one of Portugal’s best museums. Once an episcopal palace, this beautiful building is home to a vast collection of paintings, tapestries and jewellery. Afterwards, return to where your ship waits in Pinhão and continue on to Entre-os-Rios. On arrival this evening, enjoy free time to explore this gorgeous, vibrant town as you please.

Day 7. Entre-os-Rios, Vila Nova de Gaia

This morning, cruise back to the enchanting city of Vila Nova de Gaia, on the southern bank of the Douro River. On arrival, join a fascinating tour of nearby Porto, which sits just across the river. Here, you’ll be led past a collection of the city’s most famous attractions, and visit a local port winery for a tour and tasting. This afternoon, there’s ample time to explore Porto at leisure. You may like to visit a Portuguese boutique to buy authentic, local souvenirs. Or perhaps you’d enjoy taking a stroll through Porto’s old-fashioned Bolhão food market, where fishmongers, butchers, greengrocers and florists all peddle their wares. Alternatively, you may like to take an optional tour to Palácio da Bolsa (own expense). Tonight, enjoy a final Farewell Dinner with your fellow travellers back on board.

Day 8. Disembark Ship, Depart Porto
