Five of the World's Most Iconic Views

There’s nothing quite like setting eyes on that landmark you’ve always longed to see. It’s at the heart of why we travel in the first place. So here are a few of our favourite sites, where the view just never gets old, no matter how many times you’re lucky enough to visit.

Matterhorn, Switzerland

The Swiss ski town Zermatt lies in the shadow of Europe’s most famous mountain, the Matterhorn. The pyramid-shaped 4,478-metre-high peak can be admired as you wander the pretty, car-free resort town, as well as from your home for the night – the chalet-style Hotel Sonne.

Grand Canyon, USA

It’s the colours that are perhaps the most surprising aspect of seeing the Grand Canyon first-hand. Created by the Colorado River in the United States over six million years, the 29-kilometre-wide, 1.6-kilometre-deep canyon reveals layers of rock that merge from muted orange and yellow to vibrant red and deep purple. See it from the South Rim or, better still, from the Grand Canyon Railway – a historic locomotive that offers views of the changing terrain.

Milford Sound/Piopiotahi, New Zealand

Depending on the weather, your view of New Zealand’s famous Milford Sound/Piopiotahi could consist of thundering waterfalls shrouded in mist or sheer mountains framed by blue sky – either way, this magnificent fiord is dramatic. Mitre Peak shoots up skyward from the sea floor, surveying the surrounding Fiordland National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife too. Fiordland crested penguins, New Zealand fur seals and an array of native birds can often be spotted here.
