Kitty Cross, a Travelmarvel Canada & Alaska Tour Director, talks star gazing and wildlife watching in Jasper National Park. A dark preserve where skies shine by night and the mountain scenery wows by day.

How long have you worked for the company and what is your favourite thing about working for Travelmarvel?
I've been with the company for five years I think and I'm based in Chemainus BC. My favourite thing about working for Travelmarvel is the extraordinary behind-the-scenes support that make the tours look sleek and problem free. The professional handling of all the things the guests never see make me look good in the eyes of our guests.

What does your job entail and what do you love most about it?
Finding new things every day to make this extraordinary place come alive in the eyes of our travellers. Every guest comes with a different idea of what Canada is. It's my job to find that 'thing' and let them discover the magic for themselves.

What has been your favourite on-tour moment and why?
Jasper National Park is a dark sky preserve. Several of us had gone for a walk one evening, looking for the reason that's so special. There was Cassiopia and Orion and the Great Bear and the Seven Sisters – all of the northern sky was on display.

Not a sound in the group as we took in the show. All of a sudden we heard rustling in the trees about 20 meters away and there stood a full-grown bull elk watching us watch the sky. He turned, looked up and all of us watched as meteors began streaking across the sky. That's one of those moments on tour you never ever forget.

What does travel mean to you?

Travel means having everything fill you with a sense of wonder and getting in touch with your inner child. The best travel experiences let you experience the world with a five-year-old's sense of wonder. When you can take a blade of grass, make a whistle out of it through your fingers and giggle because you can do that, you have truly travelled.

What destination is 'calling' you?
Wow, everywhere! I have an idea I'd like to spend some time in Bhutan. I've been to Vietnam several times but I'd really like to spend six months walking through the countryside, learning a little dialect, talking to farmers about rice and fishermen about fish. And somehow my heart always seems to settle easily in Central and South America. Bottom line is it doesn't matter – as long as I'm travelling.
