Upon arrival at the airport you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel for a comfortable two-night stay.
Stay: Two Nights, San Francisco, Westin St Francis
In the afternoon board a ferry at Pier 33 and cross San Francisco Bay to the infamous island of Alcatraz. You’ll journey right into the prison to see the cells as they were when it was operational, and hear fascinating stories of some of the escape attempts by prisoners that took place over the years.
Enjoy a sightseeing tour today, visiting some of the city’s most famous sights, including the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf.
San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, Turlock
Depart from Oakland by train, on the San Joaquin route through California’s Central Valley, bordered on the west by coastal mountain ranges and on the east by Yosemite National Park.
Upon arrival at Merced by rail, you’ll transfer by coach into Yosemite for a fascinating tour of the Valley Floor. Here, take in spectacular views of Half Dome at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley, the 3,000 ft El Capitan and Bridalveil Falls.

Rejoin the San Joaquin route today and continue on your journey to Bakersfield. From here, your trip takes you by coach across the incredibly vast Mojave Desert. During this part of your trip take an up-close look at desert life as you pass small, isolated villages and abandoned ghost towns before the bright lights of Las Vegas appear. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel, where you will spend the next two nights. Then, the night is yours to head out and take in the fascinating sights and sounds of this buzzing world-famous city.

Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Williams
Today, you’ll travel across Nevada to Arizona via the Hoover Dam. This remarkable engineering masterpiece was completed in 1936 to end the flooding, which was caused by the Colorado River. Entering Arizona, drive along the legendary Route 66, which has been immortalised in song, before arriving in the town of Williams.

Travel aboard vintage carriages hauled by historic locomotives on the Grand Canyon Railway to see the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon.
This evening drive to Flagstaff to board Amtrak’s overnight Southwest Chief to Los Angeles.
Arrive at the South Rim, the Canyon’s main viewpoint and an ideal base to experience the dramatic vistas. Return to Williams on the Grand Canyon Railway.

Hollywood, RMS Queen Mary
Travel to Long Beach for one night on board the RMS Queen Mary. This ship, which is now a hotel, has a fascinating history as a luxury ocean liner, as well as being a high-speed troop carrier during the Second World War. On board, enjoy the ship’s original 1930s artwork and art deco styling, with each stateroom offering a glimpse into ocean travel over the decades throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Your evening is free to spend exploring the attractions of Long Beach at your leisure.
This morning, relax aboard the Southwest Chief as it continues through Fullerton in Orange County, travelling past the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles before reaching Union Station. Your first stop in Los Angeles is star-studded Hollywood. Enjoy free time here to explore the home of the USA’s film industry, with the chance to walk in the stars’ footsteps along the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard and to soak up the atmosphere. Later, enjoy a free evening aboard the RMS Queen Mary.

The Coast Starlight, Monterey
Travel aboard the iconic Coast Starlight for a daytime journey along the stunning Pacific Coast shoreline. Upon reaching the Pacific Coast at Ventura, the Coast Starlight heads north, hugging the coastline and following the Pacific Coast Highway. On board, relax in the Sightseer Lounge Car and enjoy spectacular views through floor-to-ceiling windows. See stretches of pristine beaches as the train hugs the coast north of Santa Barbara.
Entering the Salinas Valley by rail, pass the Santa Lucia and Diablo mountain ranges en route to Salinas, where you’ll transfer by coach to Monterey.

Carmel, Big Sur
This morning after breakfast, you will explore the wonderful Californian coastline. This includes seeing the exclusive residences of 17 Mile Drive and the attractive waterfront of Cannery Row, which was made famous by John Steinbeck. You will also visit Carmel, where Clint Eastwood was once mayor, a charming town that has attracted artists for decades. Later this afternoon, discover the Big Sur, where the Pacific coastline rises dramatically into the Santa Lucia Mountains.
Enjoy the day at leisure to explore. Perhaps stroll the historic quarter or visit the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. You might like to visit Stevenson House, where author Robert Louis Stevenson lived and wrote The Old Pacific Capital.
