Today your cruise along the mighty Mekong river begins! Travel through rural villages to Kampong Cham to the mighty Mekong River, where you will embark the RV La Marguerite – your home for the next seven nights. Enjoy welcome drinks, followed by lunch in the Mekong Restaurant. This afternoon, enjoy a tuk tuk ride through the agricultural island of Koh Pen. Travel along the shaded lanes, past wooden stilted houses tucked amongst palm and sandalwood trees. Depending on the time of year, you can see a variety range of crops growing, including tobacco or betel nuts, as well as coconuts and tropical fruits. Angkor Ban, Oknha Tey
This morning enjoy a tour of Angkor Ban, a village awash in stories of Cambodia’s cultural history, and one of the few traditional villages that survived the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. During a walking tour, view the traditional wooden houses standing intact on stilts and shaded by banana trees. Return to your ship and continue sailing towards Oknha Tey – also referred to as the Silk Island due to its rich tradition of silk weaving. Disembark and board a local Tuk Tuk for a village tour. Discover village life from the local homes to the rice fields, and the faces of the friendly locals. You can also continue on a walk for a more in-depth exploration of the village.Daily :
Oudong, Phnom Penh
Take an ox-cart ride, coined the ‘Khmer limousine’, and see how locals live in rural Cambodia.
Travel to the former royal capital Oudong for a traditional Buddhist blessing, sure to be a memorable highlight of your Mekong River cruise.
Travel to Oudong, the former capital of Cambodia and a place of pilgrimage for the Cambodian Buddhist community. Visit the spectacular Buddhist monastery where you will have the opportunity to partake in a Buddhist blessing ceremony. Afterwards, you will have a traditional experience of an Ox Cart ride, which will take you around the villages. In Phnom Penh, the afternoon is free for you to explore or perhaps enhance your time by choosing one of Travelmarvel's select experiences such as a tuk tuk ride to uncover the sights and sounds of the city, or gain a greater appreciation of the local beers at the Kingdom Brewery (all at own expense). With the next two nights docked in Phnom Penh, you are free to experience the nightlife of the Cambodian capital. Start the morning with a sobering excursion to the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Located on the site of the Khmer Rouge’s notorious Security Prison 21 (S21), learn about Cambodia's Khmer Rouge history as well as the resilience of the local people. After lunch, visit the Royal Palace and the spectacular Silver Pagoda. The remainder of the day is yours to relax on board or visit the markets to pick up some bargains. While here, the brave can try the local delicacies of fried tarantula and crickets, or try out your haggling skills. Border Crossing, Tan Chau
Spend today on board as your ship cruises to the Vietnamese border. Offering amazing views, reclining loungers, a swimming pool and cold drinks from the bar, the Sun Deck is a great place to relax. This afternoon, you might like to attend a fruit-carving demonstration by the ship’s chef while border formalities are carried out and you cross into Vietnam. Take a boat ride to the charming colonial town of Sa Dec for a tour. Visit Huynh Thuy Le’s old house, once the lover of French writer Marguerite Duras, the namesake of our vessel. After lunch, a local boat transfers you to the river-land town of Cai Be. See the French Gothic cathedral, and see the small boats laden with fresh produce at the floating market.
