After breakfast, enjoy a tour of Los Angeles, the City of Angels, taking in Hollywood and the Chinese Mann Theatre, which plays host to the annual Oscars ceremony. After lunch, you’ll transfer to The Burbank Studios for a guided tour, ahead of an evening at leisure.

Travel aboard the iconic Coast Starlight for a daytime journey along the Pacific Coast. You’ll reach the Pacific Coast at Ventura, where the Coast Starlight heads north, following the coastline and the Pacific Coast Highway. Relax in the sightseer lounge and enjoy panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Vast stretches of pristine beaches line your route as the train traces the rugged coast north of Santa Barbara. Entering the Salinas Valley, pass the Santa Lucia and Diablo mountain ranges en route to Salinas, from where you’ll transfer to Monterey for two nights.

Today, head to Carmel, where Clint Eastwood was once mayor. Also known as Carmel-by-the-Sea, this is a charming town that has attracted artists for decades. Along the way, there’s time to explore the Californian coastline known as Big Sur, including the exclusive residences of 17 Mile Drive and the attractive waterfront of Cannery Row. Later, return to Monterey for an evening at leisure.

Travel to San Francisco today, taking the beautiful Pacific Highway, and enjoying the stunning coastline along the way. On arrival, the evening is yours to settle in and familiarise yourself with your locale. Perhaps dine at a local restaurant.

Stay: Two Nights, San Francisco, Le Meridian

Today’s sightseeing tour of San Francisco visits some of this cosmopolitan city’s most famous sights, including the Golden Gate Bridge as well as the historic Fisherman’s Wharf district. This afternoon enjoy your own time to relax or explore as you like. Perhaps board a ferry at Pier 33 and cross San Francisco Bay to visit the infamous island of Alcatraz, which once held the gangster Al Capone.

Depart from Oakland by train on the San Joaquin route through California’s Central Valley, bordered on the west by coastal mountain ranges and on the east by Yosemite National Park.

At Merced, transfer by coach into Yosemite National Park for a tour of the Valley Floor, taking in spectacular views of Half Dome at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley, as well as towering El Capitan and the thundering Bridalveil Falls.

Rejoin the San Joaquin line today en route to Bakersfield. From here, continue by coach across the Mojave Desert, passing small, isolated villages and abandoned ghost towns. Eventually, the tall buildings and bright lights of Las Vegas appear on the horizon.

Today is yours to explore Las Vegas as you like. The monorail is a great way to discover the amazing spectacles of the famous Las Vegas Strip. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the extraordinary selection of entertainment choices that can be found on your doorstep including the world-famous casinos.


Then spend the afternoon journeying along Mount Carmel Highway and through Utah’s Zion National Park. A spectacular sight with intense, cliff-like mountains rising completely vertically from a verdant valley floor, through which a beautiful blue river flows.

This morning, travel to the city of Springdale with time to explore.

Far less well known than the world-famous Grand Canyon, but no less spectacular, Bryce Canyon is an incredible selection of enormous natural amphitheatres and ‘hoodoos’, thin spires of umber-coloured rocks.


Head on to Monument Valley, passing Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. Instantly recognisable as the setting for countless cowboy movies in the ‘Golden Age of Westerns’ era, there is time to take photos and admire the scenery.

This morning, your first destination is Bryce Canyon. Head towards Monument Valley before arriving at your hotel later this evening.

Later, step back in time with a stay in the beautifully preserved Grand Canyon Railway Hotel.

After breakfast, drive to the railroad town of Williams. A journey which travels along the incredible Monument Valley loop drive, where you can spot many sites made famous by old western movies.

Journey by rail to the world-famous Grand Canyon aboard the Grand Canyon Railway. Travelling in vintage carriages hauled by historic locomotives, head to the Grand Canyon, to witness one of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights. Arrive at the South Rim, the Canyon’s main viewpoint and an ideal base to fully experience its dramatic vistas.

Today, journey by rail to the world-famous Grand Canyon aboard the Grand Canyon Railway. Later return to Williams on the Grand Canyon Railway for a relaxing evening.

Head to Sedona, by way of Oak Creek Canyon, this morning. Visit Montezuma Castle National Monument, a fascinating structure built into the cliffside by the Sinagua people between 1100 and 1425 AD. Then continue to Camp Verde State Historical Park to enjoy lunch. From here, continue to Phoenix. Later this afternoon your journey draws to a close as we transfer you to the airport in Phoenix for your onward flight.
