New Zealand’s North Island Self Drive Example Itinerary

Welcome to Auckland! On arrival you’ll be met with a private transfer to your hotel. Enjoy a free afternoon to experience Auckland independently.

Stay: Rydges Auckland

Collect your rental car from the Auckland city depot and drive to Waitomo Caves, home to thousands of tiny luminescent glow-worms. Tour the incredible caves then continue driving to Rotorua. During a day at leisure, you might like to head out on one of the numerous optional tours available to you (extra cost). In the evening, you’ll be collected for a tour to Tamaki Maori Village. Get a taste of traditional Maori culture and village life, with a fabulous dinner and a concert.

Stay: Two nights, Sudima Rotorua

Continue your road trip south to Napier. On the way, you may choose to stop at beautiful Lake Taupo, the caldera lake of the Taupo Volcano. The next day is all yours to discover the beautiful coastal town of Napier. With its wonderfully preserved Art Deco architecture, surrounded by vineyards and long stretches of coastline, you’ll be spoilt for choice as to how to spend your day.

Enjoy the scenery on your drive further south to Wellington. On the way, perhaps stop at Palmerston North for lunch. Here, many of the original stores built in the 1920s and 1930s have been restored and now function as boutiques, cafes and restaurants. In Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city, you’ll be able to explore on your own terms. You may choose to head up to Mount Victoria for fantastic views the city or visit Te Papa, New Zealand's National Museum. Perhaps a stroll through the botanic gardens is more your style.

Return your hire car at Wellington airport where your journey comes to an end.
